Laparoscopic Surgery
Often called minimally invasive surgery (MIS), band-aid surgery or keyhole surgery, laparoscopic surgery is an innovative surgical technique in which abdominal operations are performed through small incisions, often less than a centimeter long. Laparoscopic surgery gets its name through the use of a laparoscope, which is a small video camera attached to a fiber optic cable system used to guide the operation.
Laparoscopic surgery can treat most gastrointestinal tract and abdominal conditions, including:
- hernias
- gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy)
- bariatric or weight loss surgery
- hiatal hernia repair
- colorectal surgery
There are a number of advantages to laparoscopic surgery, such as reduced pain, less chance for complications, a shorter recovery time and minimal scarring. Your surgeon will discuss with you whether or not you may be a candidate for laparoscopy or if you will need a traditional open incision.
